How do you keep the cork moist in a large format wine bottle?
October 19, 2008 - A recent Wine Spectator magazine featured a number of spectacular wine cellars with collectible double magnums, jeroboams and other large format bottles proudly on display standing upright. How do these collectors keep the corks from drying out?
I would assume the display was for the pictures and perhaps portions of the day for sale.... They would have to be stored properly the rest of the time ..... or they are solely display bottles and the collections are writing them off for the purpose of exposure. A shame to see great bottles go to waste if that is the case. Or another thought is that these display bottles are filled with cheaper less quality varietals.... Just a thought ...Peace.....
They don't. I've known many collectors who garrsihly display large bottles as you mentioned. The wine is sacrificed in the name of ego. For myself, I store them properly then consume the big bad boys and display the empty. There's alway a better story with a used bottle than an unused one don't you think?
- Best way to keep the cork moist is to lay yhe bottle on it's side and allow the wine to keep it moist. Will prevent mold also.
