Wine Gift???
October 17, 2008 - It is my boyfriends 22nd birthday soon and i would really like to buy him a bottle of wine from 1986 for the novelty i suppose. Does anyone know which internet site or where i could get an australian white chardonnay from 1986 that doesnt cost an arm and a leg or am i asking the impossible...
I assume your getting a white wine because he likes fruitier or sweeter wines, however it is true that a white wine would be spoiled and undrinkable. You should consider looking for a port wine. Port is a red dessert wine from Portugal. You can get a Ruby or a Tawny. I personally likeTawny's better, they tend to have flavors of brown sugar and mollases. They are higher in alcohol and sugar than most red wines so be careful cause they'll sneak up on you and leave you with a nasty hangover. Fonseca, Dow's, and Warres are all popular vineyards producing port. I did a google search for a 1986 port and plenty came up ranging from $20 to $70 dollars. Port wine ages well and goes great with chocolate so maybe pair it with some truffles and offer it as dessert after a nice meal. Sip, don't chug and port wine will surely have you warm and giddy in no time. Enjoy and good luck!
- white only lasts for two years, anything after that and it tastes like pee in a bottle. that includes champagne. the only thing you could go for is a red; but you won't get that in a supermarket - it might cost you a bit, but check the internet for wine dealers.
I think its a great idea! Go for an accessible red though to be fair one from that vintage will be fairly rich and complex. A search on the web will surely generate a load of options; I can personally recommend a chateaux brane cantenac which is a second growth french wine with a jammy edge to it. It will be around £40 or $80. Why not get him a nice wine bottle opener to go with it and complete the gift. Good luck!
- I am sorry to say that I don't have an answer to your question, but I wanted you to know that it really is a lovely idea that you had. I hope you can find what you are looking for. I hope to do the same thing in the future for my niece. Thanks
